Meet Nicola at Foundation Bulk Food Store
When I am out and about looking for new businesses to partner with, I have a soft spot for the bulk food stores. I love these stores, not just because of the quality and vitality of the food available but because buying raw ingredients leads to learning about food preparation and cooking. I was glad to see a bulk food store open locally and was fortunate to speak with Bulk Foundation Food Store founder Nicola Condon.
AB - Can you tell me a little about your background and your interest in health and wellbeing?
NC - My business background is in management and photography, I am a photographer by trade and I previously managed large photography companies as well as working with my husband Ben in our Real Estate business. I was pretty busy, stressed and worn out most of the time. When I decided to start a family, I faced a few challenges, that’s where I came to an absolute focus on health. I was a very strict vegan for many years, but not necessarily a healthy vegan. I was the type of person that was working 60 hours a week, grabbing whatever I could to eat, which was often a processed soy products. That’s when I started to really research nutrition, wellness and a holistic approach to health.
AB - What led you to you opening the Foundation Bulk Food Store?
NC –Going from running large businesses with hundreds of staff to being responsible one child daily was quite a contrast. After a couple of years, I realized I needed to do something more. I loved being a stay at home mum but I knew that I wanted to go back to work when my daughter started school and I knew that I didn’t want to work for someone else, I wanted to do something of my own. I looked at my lifestyle and the things that I’m passionate about, nutrition, waste reduction, well being, and sourcing awesome products that do good; products that are making a positive impact in the world. I wanted to be part of an industry that’s responsible and progressive.
AB - What do you intend for the Foundation Bulk Food Store to contribute to the community?
NC – Affordability and access to good quality food, people should not have to eat rubbish because healthy food is more expensive. Those that want to eat well should be able to, no matter their budget. I also want to help people understand ingredients and how to use them, to cook meals from scratch. We are all so busy these days, grabbing a readymade meal from the supermarket can be pretty tempting but whipping up a quick and easy wholesome meal at home can be just as simple with a little bit of know-how.
AB – Nicola, Thanks very much for your time.
